Air Transportation

Commercial Airports
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the principal passenger and cargo terminal serving Winchester-Frederick County. It is located 50 miles to the east accessible by four laned Virginia Hwy 7 or by U.S. Hwy 50.

IAD offers over 650 daily departures to domestic destinations and nearly 400 weekly departures to international destinations. Over 12 million passengers pass through its portals each year. IAD handles over 552 million pounds of cargo and over 122 million pounds mail each year. It is the one of the fastest growing airports, domestically and internationally, in the USA.

IAD is served by 23 passenger carriers, 10 commuter lines, and 5 all cargo scheduled carriers.

Washington Dulles International Airport has a design capacity of 55 million passengers, five times current passenger use. The markets of its domestic and international destinations represent 50% of the world's Gross National Product.

The Washington Dulles World Cargo Center is the largest cargo hub in the Mid Atlantic. Capacity tripled in June 1993, adding 281,000 ft2 of state of the art building space with 50 truck docks, and 430,000 ft2 of aircraft parking apron. FTZ#137, a Foreign Trade Zone, and 24 hour customs are available. Over 90 forwarders and service companies are available. General Aviation
Winchester-Frederick County is served by the Winchester Regional Airport. Winchester Regional Airport offers a 5,500' runway, a modern terminal with weather service, and U.S. Customs service (on call). VOR/DME instrumentation provides operational approach minima of 345' ceiling and one mile visibility. ILS will become operation in 1997 which will improve operations to 200' minimum and 1/4 mile visibility operational minima. Jet A and 100 LL fuel is available. Aircraft rentals and flight training are available. Limo and auto rental are available on site at the airport. Winchester Regional Airport provides cargo service limited to the size of aircraft which can be accommodated by the runway.

Rail Service

Rail Service is provided by CSX Transportation and by Winchester & Western which provides connecting service between CSX, Conrail and the Norfolk Southern. Piggyback service and intermodal transfer are provided by Norfolk Southern at the Virginia Inland Port, 15 miles south of Winchester. Service is provided to Norfolk; Atlanta; Chicago, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Memphis, Detroit and St. Louis. Mini land bridge service for international and domestic freight to the west coast is also available.

Port Service

The Virginia Inland Port (VIP) is an intermodal shipping center. Export cargo destined for international markets is trucked into VIP and railed via Norfolk Southern Railroad to the Virginia International Terminals for transfer to steamship vessels calling on the Hampton Roads Ports. Import cargo is provided with shipline service to markets in Northern Virginia, WV, MD, OH, and PA. The midwest markets can be reached via intermodel and other ports (for international traffic) can be reached via the NS Rail system (i.e. Long Beach, Houston, Miami, Seattle). Domestic cargo is railed to and from markets served by the North American Rail System.

The facility is located on 161 acres just 15 miles south of Winchester on Route 522 S., 1.6 miles north of I-66 and 7 miles east of junction I-66/I-81. Cargo departs after close of business daily, Monday through Friday and arrives daily at VIP, Monday through Saturday. Service is provided next day to Norfolk, VA.

Other services offered by VIP are U.S. Customs Inspection, USDA and SGS Inspection, roadability repairs, chassis pools, stuffing and stripping, outdoor storage and pooling equipment. Please also contact the VIP for a complete listing of Custom House Brokers, Freight Forwarders and NVOCC’s currently utilizing the facility. The Virginia Maritimer also contains a freight forwarders, shipping agents, and steamship services. Package Delivery Service

Air-Freight, Fedex, Greyhound, United Parcel Service, and Roadway Package Service all provide package services and all have terminals in Winchester-Frederick County.

Bus Service

Greyhound Bus Lines provides interstate service with two buses daily to Washington; two from Los Angeles, Dallas, Roanoke. Winchester Public Transit serves several arterials in the City of Winchester.
