

In 1980, the combined population of Winchester-Frederick County was 54,367, with Winchester having a population of 20,217 and Frederick County a population of 34,150. In 1990, the total had increased to 67,670, a 24% increase. Of the 1990 population count, Winchester tallied 21,947 people, an 8% increase and Frederick County had 45,723 people, a 33% increase.

The average age of people living in Winchester-Frederick County increased only slightly. The median age of the population in 1990 was 33 years compared with 31 years in 1980. The median age in the County has remained close to the median age for the Commonwealth as a whole (32.6 yrs) and the USA (32.8). In terms of the percentage rate of population growth, Frederick County was the eleventh fastest growing county in Virginia during the 1980's and Winchester was the eleventh fastest growing city in Virginia during the 1980's.
Winchester and Frederick County have approximately the same racial diversity as the Planning District as a whole; White 95.3%; Black 3.9%; Hispanic 0.8% and other 0.2%. Likewise, percentages of male and female are identical to the Planning District; 49% male and 51% female.
In 1980 barely 50% of the population over age 18 had high school diplomas. In 1990 that figure rose dramatically to over 70%.

RADIUS POPULATION INCLUDES 10 mile 60,200 Winchester City and most of Frederick County. 20 mile 160,900 Front Royal and Warren County and begins to overlap into West Virginia's Berkeley and Jefferson Counties. 30 mile 240,971 Martinsburg, WV. This figure is the result of a multi-state research effort completed July 1993. 40 mile 561,500 Most of Lord Fairfax Planning District (LFPD); parts of Frederick, Allegany, and Washington Counties in Maryland; about half of Fauquier and most of Loudoun Counties to the east. 50 mile 1,391,900 1/3 of Montgomery County, MD, most of Fairfax County VA, Manassas, Culpeper, and all of Lord Fairfax PD. 60 mile 2,709,335 Part of Washington DC, and begins to encompass Adams, Fulton, and Franklin counties in Pennsylvania.
